FK Fierljeppen: A Frisian Sporting Event You Don’t Want to Miss

The Frisian Fierljeppen Championship (Frisian Pole Vaulting) is one of the highlights of the year. Friesland’s best pole vaulters compete for the Frisian titles while spectators enjoy a front-row view of the action. Experience the run-up, take-off, climb, flight across the water and landing in the sand from just a few metres away.

But the FK is about much more than sport. It’s a day filled with atmosphere, music, great food, Frisian hospitality and tradition. For many visitors it’s an annual tradition, while for others it’s their very first introduction to one of Friesland’s most spectacular sports.

Everyone should experience this event at least once.

History of the Frisian Championship (FK)

The Frisian Fierljeppen Championship has been held in Winsum since 1957. For Fierljeppers, the FK is comparable to the Wimbledon of their sport: the event everyone works towards throughout the season and the most prestigious championship in Friesland.

From 1957 until 1985, the championship was held at a temporary venue on the Skรขns across the Sint Japik. Since 1985, the competition has taken place at the permanent Fierljeppen venue on the “Oer It Dok” sports complex.
